How to Stay Connected in the USA On your phone with data roaming

Last updated on January 23rd, 2024 at 05:01 pm

A topic often on our Orlando Facebook Group is how to stay connected with mobile Data while in Florida. We have been using the Three Pay-as-you-go Sim when we travel to the States and Europe for our roaming needs. In this blog post, we will explain why this is a good option and how to use it.

Why use a three mobile pay as you go for roaming in the USA?

Three is one of the few UK mobile operators that offer free roaming in the USA on their pay as you go plans. This means that you can use your UK allowance of minutes, texts, and data in the USA at no extra cost.

This is a great deal compared to other operators that charge daily or per-minute rates for roaming in the USA. (Note that most Three contracts that aren’t Pay as you go no longer offer free roaming. If you still have it then you are one of the lucky ones and will probably lose it at some point in the future)

For example, if you have a three mobile pay as you go plan with 12GB of data, unlimited minutes, and unlimited texts, you can use all of that in the USA without paying anything extra. On the other hand, if you have a Three Pay Monthly plan (Not a PAYG Plan), roaming costsΒ Β£5 a day in the United States.

Another benefit of using a three mobile pay as you go for roaming in the USA is that you can top up your balance online or at any convenience store in the UK.

This gives you more flexibility and control over your spending. You can also buy add-ons or bundles to get more data, minutes, or texts if needed. (UK usage only)

How to use a three mobile pay as you go for roaming in the USA?

Using a three mobile pay as you go for roaming in the USA is easy and hassle-free. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • If you aren’t already on Three Pay as you go then there are plenty of places to get a Sim. Lots of supermarkets and shops sell them. You can get them from the Three website or you can purchase one through Amazon
  • Before you travel, check that international roaming is activated on your phone and your account. You can do this by logging into your My3 account online or on the app, or by calling 333 from your three mobile.
  • Make sure that your phone is compatible with 4G Calling Abroad and that it is enabled in your phone settings.
  • When you arrive in the USA, turn on your phone and wait for it to connect to a network. You might see a welcome message from three with some information about roaming in the USA.
  • Start using your phone as normal. You can make and receive calls and texts to UK numbers, and use data services. All of this will come out of your UK allowance or balance. You will not be charged anything extra unless you exceed your fair usage limit of 12GB of data per month.
  • If you need more data, minutes, or texts (UK usage only), you can buy add-ons or bundles online or on the app. You can also top up your balance online or at any convenience store in the UK.

When you arrive back in the UK you don’t have to top up your three sim or use it again.

That’s it! You can enjoy roaming in the USA with a three mobile pay as you go without worrying about high bills or hidden charges. For more information about roaming in the USA with three, visit Mobile roaming in United States – Support – Three.

Alternative

The only other network we have had experience within the USA is O2. O2 offers free roaming in the USA.

We found it to be very slow but have heard from others that it wasn’t too bad. As we found the O2 signal to be bad around the lodge we have moved away from the network and always now use Three when we go abroad.

Great blog guys πŸ™‚ really informative. I have a 25gb Data for international roaming including USA which I’ll use for Google Maps and out and about.
When it comes to calls in the UsA do you recommend a dual sim? If I was to break down say and needed to make a US call. What’s the best iyo to get.
Thanks Steve

Have you looked into getting an esim to work alongside your normal sim?
Martin Lewis recommends it. I’m going to try it when we go next month
