The Ultimate Guide to Motorhome Electric Hookups (EHU)

When we’re out travelling in Elvis, our Elddis Autoquest 155 Motorhome across the UK and Europe, one of the questions we get asked most often is how to safely manage campsite electrics.

Plugging your motorhome or campervan into a campsite hookup (EHU) isn’t quite the same as just plugging something in at home.

To help you out, we’ve put together everything you need to know to keep your power running smoothly and safely!.

The Hookup Plug Type

To connect to a standard UK or European campsite pitch, you need a BS EN 60309 blue 3-pin industrial plug.

This is usually a 16A male plug on your lead to connect to the site post, and a female coupler that goes into your van.

The Golden Safety Rule: Uncoil Your Cable

We can’t stress this enough: always fully unroll your electric hookup cable before plugging it in.

If you leave the cable coiled up on its reel while running high-load appliances, it acts like an induction coil.

This generates intense heat, which can easily melt the insulation, cause a short circuit, or even start a fire.

Understanding Amp Ratings & Balancing the Load

Campsite electricity is limited. While your house gets around 60A to 100A, UK campsites typically only provide 10A or 16A.

If we’re on the continent, some European sites offer as little as 4A to 6A!.

To avoid tripping the site’s supply, you must balance your load. You can use this simple formula to calculate how many amps your appliances pull: Amps = Watts Γ· 240V.

Our Rule of Thumb: Never run two high-heating appliances at the same time. So, we wait until Nick has finished drying his hair before flicking the kettle on for a nice cup of green tea!

What Happens When It Trips?

If you exceed the pitch’s amp limit, the circuit breaker on the campsite post will trip and cut your power.

If you lose power, here is what you need to do:

  • Turn off or unplug the last appliance you turned on.
  • Head out to the campsite hookup post and look for your pitch’s switch.
  • Flick the flipped toggle switch back to the ON position.
  • If the post is locked or resetting it doesn’t work, you will need to ask the site warden for assistance, as you may have tripped the main master board.

Leisure Batteries vs. Mains Power

  • Leisure Batteries (12V DC): These power your lights, water pump, and USB sockets when you are off-grid.
  • Mains Hookup (240V AC): When plugged into a campsite, a built-in charger automatically tops up your leisure battery while simultaneously powering your standard 240V plug sockets.

Using an Inverter (Going Off-Grid)

An inverter takes 12V DC power from your leisure battery and converts it into 240V AC power so you can run household appliances when you aren’t plugged into a campsite post.

  • Size Matters: A large inverter (e.g., 3000W) can run heavy-load appliances like coffee machines or microwaves.
  • The Battery Drain: Running high-wattage appliances through an inverter draws massive amounts of current from your batteries. For example, running a 2175W appliance through an inverter pulls over 180 Amps directly from a 12V battery bank.
  • Lithium vs. AGM: To handle massive inverter draws without voltage drops, high-capacity Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are highly recommended over traditional AGM or lead-acid batteries.

Reverse Polarity (European Travel)

When travelling in Europe, you might encounter continental hookup points where the live and neutral wires are reversed.

  • The Risk: Your appliances will still work, but if a fault occurs, the appliance’s internal fuse won’t cut the live power, leaving it live even when switched off.
  • The Fix: Carry a reverse polarity tester plug to check the socket when you plug in, and keep a short crossover cable handy to flip the wires back safely if needed.

Earth Leakage Trips (RCDs)

Your vehicle is fitted with an RCD (Residual Current Device), which monitors the electrical current.

If it detects a fault (like moisture getting into an outdoor socket, a faulty appliance, or a frayed wire), it will trip instantly to prevent electric shocks.

If you lose power but the campsite post hasn’t tripped, check your vehicle’s consumer unit first.

Smart Chargers and Overcharging

Modern vans feature intelligent three-stage smart chargers.

When plugged into mains power, they automatically fast-charge your battery, top it off, and then drop down to a “float” charge to prevent overheating or damaging the battery cells.

If you have an older manual charger system, leaving it plugged in indefinitely on a long stay can boil and destroy traditional lead-acid batteries.

Solar Power Integration

When you are on a site with an electric hookup, your solar panels and your mains charger will work side-by-side.

The solar charge controller is smart enough to realize the mains charger is doing the heavy lifting and will dial back its input.

Once you unplug, the solar system seamlessly takes back over to keep your 12V system alive.

Generator Etiquette

If a campsite allows generators for off-grid power generation:

  • Check the rules: Most sites restrict their use to specific hours (e.g., 2 hours in the morning and afternoon) to prevent noise pollution.
  • Inverter Generators: Use a quiet, modern digital inverter generator rather than a loud construction-style one to keep the peace and protect sensitive electronics.
