The “Just Go” Vibe

There’s nothing quite like that feeling of hitting the open road with absolutely zero idea where we’ll be parking Elvis for the night.

Don’t get us wrong, we do love to have a proper plan sometimes, especially if we’re heading somewhere specific or want to guarantee a spot. But other times, it is just so nice to just head off without a strict plan and see where the road takes us.

For us, that’s exactly what van life is all about! It’s about flexibility and going with the flow. If we love a spot, we stay. If there’s a bad feeling about the place, we simply turn the key and move on.

You do need a proper off-grid setup to pull off those unplanned trips, though. Plenty of water and a solid solar and inverter system are an absolute must.

When we were looking for a van, having a proper toilet and shower was our biggest non-negotiable.

We love being completely off-grid, but we still want it to feel like a proper home on wheels!

Laybys & Playing by the Rules

Sometimes a little layby is the best spot, but you’ve got to use your common sense.

Always check for local council signs restricting overnight parking. If there’s a sign, don’t risk a ticket!

We always stick to a strict “zero footprint” rule: no awnings, no chairs out, and definitely no rubbish.

If a local asks us to move, we just politely pack up and go.

Trust Your Gut

If we pull up somewhere and it just doesn’t feel right, we move on. If you watch our videos, you will have seen us do that a few times. We have to feel safe before we stay the night.

There’s always another spot a few miles down the road.

Honestly, there’s a lot of comfort in spotting a few other motorhomes parked up. Safety in numbers really does give you peace of mind.

Why Europe Does It Better

If you head across the channel, France and Germany are just on another level.

French Aires and German Stellplätze are brilliant because they actually treat motorhomes like valued tourists!

They provide proper waste and water points, often for free or just a few euros.

It’s a massive reminder of how much the UK still needs to catch up, and we hope one day we will get more over here

Our Essential Apps

We get asked all the time how we find our spots, so we thought we’d show you inside the ‘Motorhome’ app folder on our phones! These are our absolute go-to apps for finding the best sites and park-ups.”

• Park4Night: For us, this is the absolute gold standard and the app we find ourselves clicking on more than anything else. What makes it a total lifesaver is that it’s completely community-driven, meaning you get real-time, honest reviews and photos from other travellers who have actually stayed there. We always use this one if we’re just looking for a handy town car park to leave Elvis in for a few hours of exploring, or if we’re hunting down a beautiful, tucked-away off-grid spot for an overnight stay. It takes so much of the guesswork out of it!
• Camping-Car Park: These are absolutely brilliant for secure, 24/7 self-service spots when we take Elvis over to France. Honestly, they’re some of our absolute favourite places to park up on the continent, and we are praying we get something just like them over here in the UK one day! They usually have everything you need—electric hookups, fresh water, dump stations, and proper hard-standing pitches—and they are always cracking value for money.
• Searchforsites: We use this as our fantastic backup app. The best part is that it works offline, which is an absolute lifesaver when you’re out with no signal. It’s got a great mix of spots, including lovely pub car parks and farms. One little bit of advice: it takes a while to update all the info when you first open the app, so definitely get that done at home before you hit the road.
• Brit Stops: This is such a brilliant, hassle-free way to grab a free overnight stop. It’s basically a network of pub car parks, so there are rarely any services, but as long as your van is totally self-contained, it’s perfect! The only “rule” is that you pop inside and support the host by grabbing a drink or a meal, which is honestly the best excuse for a pint and a cracking pub dinner without having to cook!
• Campercontact: This one is an absolute lifesaver if you’re driving a bigger motorhome like we do with Elvis. The best feature by far is that it lets you filter the results by your exact height and length, so you never have to worry about turning up to a spot only to find you can’t squeeze into it! It’s a massive database packed with proper sites, parking spaces, and those essential service points for filling your water and emptying your waste.
• Club CLs: Club CLs—which stand for Certified Locations—are brilliant little five-van sites usually tucked away on farms or private land. Because they’re exclusive to club members, they offer a guaranteed quiet, relaxed vibe far away from the massive, busy holiday parks. They’re absolutely perfect for when we just want to park Elvis up somewhere peaceful with basic water and waste facilities, without any of the usual campsite chaos. Each one is different and usually on the owner’s property. So far, we have found all owners to be absolutely lovely, and they are great people to find out about the local area
• Campy: This is a really handy, free app to keep in your back pocket just in case your usual go-to apps come up blank. Sometimes you hit a popular area, and all the spots are totally packed, or you’re just not feeling the vibe of what’s on offer. That’s exactly when we pull up Campy. It’s incredibly simple to navigate, has surprisingly brilliant coverage across the UK and Europe, and often throws up some hidden gems that the other apps miss. If we’re ever struggling to find a nice, quiet park-up for Elvis, it’s a fantastic little backup to save the day!
• Airestop: We’ve also been looking into AireStop (airestop.co.uk), a platform working to build a network of European-style stopovers right here in the UK. The site connects motorhome owners directly with private landowners such as farmers, sports clubs, and pubs who have space available for an overnight stay. You can handle the booking and payment directly through their system. It’s a really practical option when we just need a secure place to park Elvis for the night without paying for the full campsite’s facilities. It’s exactly the kind of infrastructure the UK needs more of to support self-contained vans.

Whether we’ve planned a route out perfectly or we’re just completely winging it and seeing where the day takes us, having these apps ready to go just makes the whole experience so much easier.

It really is all about finding that perfect balance between being prepared and embracing the absolute freedom of the open road.

There is no better feeling than finding that perfect spot, getting the kettle on for a nice pot of tea, and just soaking in the view.
